China accounted for almost half of mobile phone subscriptions and more than two-thirds of total internet users among the six Asia-Pacific countries studied by Euromonitor International in 2011.
Whilst China's massive population of 1.3 billion people accounts for its high number of individual users, consistent investment in infrastructure has been a major factor in high broadband penetration in the country's urban areas.
Forrester Research reported that in the second quarter of 2011, China’s broadband penetration rate in urban areas reached 68% In comparison, eMarketer estimates household broadband in the US at 67.8% and in Japan at 70.7% in 2011.
China's overall internet penetration rate is 34.6% for 2011, with a total of 146.4 million connected households. By 2016, this number is expected to rise to 60% - or 270.7 million households.
